Choosing an engagement ring if you’re looking for something other than the classic diamond

When it comes to engagement rings, many people still immediately think of a fairly classic image: a diamond, yellow gold or platinum, and a design that has changed very little over the years.

But not everyone is looking for something traditional.

More and more often, I notice that people are actually looking for a ring that feels more personal. A ring that isn’t chosen simply because that’s what’s expected, but because it truly suits the person who will ultimately wear it.

Choosing an engagement ring often starts with its appearance—the stone, the color of the gold, or a design that immediately catches your eye. However, there are a few other factors that are just as important to consider when making that choice.

As a goldsmith, I therefore don’t just look at how a ring looks, but above all at how it will hold up over the years.

An engagement ring doesn’t have to follow any set rules

When it comes to engagement rings, people often think there are certain rules. For example, that a ring must always have a diamond or look a certain way.

In reality, of course, that’s not the case at all.

The most beautiful engagement rings are often the designs that truly suit the person who will wear them, not the rings that meet traditional expectations.

Some people feel right at home with a classic solitaire ring. Others, on the other hand, are looking for something more subtle, such as a colored gemstone or a design that’s just a little less predictable.

It is precisely that personal touch that often makes an engagement ring so special.

How is the ring worn?

Not everyone wears jewelry the same way.

Some people wear the same ring day and night. Others take off their jewelry while exercising, working, or gardening. Daily work also often plays a bigger role than people realize.

A ring that is worn every day should not only be beautiful, but also comfortable to wear and durable enough to last for years.

Choosing a Gemstone

Although diamonds have long been the most traditional choice for engagement rings, there are other gemstones that are suitable for a ring worn every day.

In fact, if you’re looking for something more personal, it might actually be interesting to look beyond the most obvious choice.

There are many beautiful gemstones that are both sustainable and unique.

Sapphire

Sapphire is one of my favorite gemstones to work with.

The stone is strong and durable, making it ideal for everyday wear. What many people don’t know is that sapphires come in many more colors than just the classic blue.

Think, for example, of green, teal, orange, or pink sapphires.

For people looking for something a little less traditional, sapphire often offers many more options than a diamond.

Spinel

Spinel is a gemstone that, in my opinion, deserves much more attention.

The stone is strong and durable, making it ideal for jewelry that is worn regularly. What I personally love about spinel is the vibrant sparkle it often has. Especially in the right light, spinel can reveal a surprising amount of character.

In addition, spinel comes in a wide range of colors, from soft shades of gray to vibrant shades of pink, red, or even blue.

Because spinel is still relatively unknown, this stone often appeals to people who are deliberately looking for something that’s just a little less obvious.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is known for its enormous variety of colors.

Not every tourmaline is automatically the most obvious choice for a ring worn every day, but in the right setting, it can be a beautiful option.

Because the stone is slightly more delicate than, for example, sapphire, the ring’s design plays a more important role here. A more protective setting can help better protect the stone during everyday wear.

For those looking for unique colors, tourmaline remains a very interesting gemstone.

Yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold?

Choosing a shade of gold is usually a very personal decision.

Some people have been wearing yellow gold for years and feel comfortable wearing it right away. Others, on the other hand, mainly wear white gold or silver-colored jewelry.

It often helps to simply look at the jewelry that someone already enjoys wearing.

An engagement ring doesn’t have to stand apart from the rest of a jewelry collection.

Often, a ring feels like a natural choice when it complements what someone already likes to wear.

Bigger isn’t always better

When it comes to engagement rings, a lot of attention is paid to the size of the stone.

Still, it’s not always the most eye-catching rings that remain beloved for years to come.

A ring that’s comfortable to wear, suits the person who will wear it every day, and is made to last often remains special for much longer than a design intended primarily to impress.

Subtle designs are sometimes underestimated. Yet it is precisely those designs that often turn out to be the most timeless.

Choose something that really suits the person wearing it

Perhaps the most important piece of advice: try not to choose what’s popular right now, but rather what truly suits the person who will be wearing the ring.

Not everyone likes large stones or bold designs. Sometimes a minimalist ring is actually a better fit. Or a design with a colored gemstone that adds a personal touch.

An engagement ring is often chosen for a special occasion. But ultimately, it becomes, above all, a part of someone’s everyday life. And perhaps that is the most important consideration.

In conclusion

Choosing an engagement ring doesn’t have to be complicated.

Take the time to explore different options, and think not only about how a ring looks, but also about how it will be worn over the long term.

There is no such thing as a perfect engagement ring that works for everyone. The best choice is usually the ring that feels like it was made just for that person.
