December birthstones: turquoise, blue topaz and tanzanite

Birthstones December

December is a special month. The end of the year is approaching, the days are short, the lights come on and there is something expectant in the air. Perhaps that is why it is not surprising that December has not one, but three birthstones: turquoise, blue topaz and tanzanite. Each with its own story, color and character.

Turquoise: a stone full of history

Turquoise is one of the oldest gemstones known. For thousands of years it has been used in jewelry and amulets, from ancient Egypt to Tibet. Its color ranges from light blue to teal, often with a veined pattern that makes each piece unique. Because of its softer texture, turquoise requires careful handling and to be worn with attention.

Blue topaz: clear and calm

Blue topaz comes in different shades, but London Blue topaz is a favorite for me personally. The deep blue color has something elegant and understated at the same time. It is a stone that stands out without being emphatic. Quiet, but not flat. That is exactly what makes it so suitable for jewelry with a refined character. This stone has now found a permanent place in my collection.

Tanzanite: rare and enchanting

Tanzanite was only discovered in the 1960s, in one small area in Tanzania. This limited provenance makes the stone exceptional. What makes tanzanite so special is the interplay between blue and violet, which changes with the light and with every movement. It does not show itself fully at once. That layered character requires attention and that is precisely what makes tanzanite so interesting to work with.

One month, three stones

Whether you fall for the earthiness of turquoise, the deep tranquility of London Blue topaz or the changeable nature of tanzanite, December offers room for different preferences. The stones match the mood of the season, as well as personal stories and memories.

In my collection, I like to work with gemstones that have something to say. London Blue topaz and tanzanite are among my favorites and regularly recur in my designs. If you have any of these stones in mind for a personal piece of jewelry, I would love to think with you.
