September’s birthstone: sapphire

Handgemaakte ring met ovale blauwe saffier in goud, geboortesteen september

September’s birthstone is sapphire. This gemstone does not make a scene, but steals the show: not too sweet, not too showy, but still stylish, strong and elegant. Sapphire exudes tranquility, but at the same time has character. Exactly the kind of stone I like to work with as a goldsmith.

Sapphire: meaning and properties

The sapphire symbolizes fidelity, wisdom and inner peace. For centuries, the stone has been seen as a protector and strength giver. But above all: it is simply a beautiful gemstone. Sapphire is the second hardest gemstone after diamonds and therefore very suitable for jewelry you wear every day.

A stone with history

Sapphire has been valued for thousands of years. In ancient Persia, people believed that the sky was blue because it reflected the color of sapphire. In the Middle Ages, kings and clerics wore sapphires as a sign of purity and wisdom. They were also seen as protectors against jealousy and disease.

To this day, sapphire can be seen in royal jewelry, such as Princess Diana’s famous engagement ring (now worn by Kate Middleton). The meaning may have changed over the centuries, but the appeal of sapphire remains timeless.

What colors of sapphire are there?

Most people immediately think of the classic blue sapphire, but did you know that this gemstone comes in many more shades: pink, yellow, white, green… I like to use these variations in my work as well. Subtle and just a little bit different. It gives each piece of jewelry its own character.

Handmade jewelry from my studio

In my studio in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, I handcraft unique jewelry with sapphire – from minimalist rings with an oval sapphire to sophisticated pendants or ear studs in subtle colors. I make each piece with attention and an eye for detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I maintain a piece of jewelry with a sapphire?
A soft toothbrush, lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap are often enough. Rinse well and dry the jewelry gently with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh detergents or ultrasonic cleaners.

Are your sapphires natural or synthetic?
I work exclusively with natural sapphires. I choose each stone with care for color, shape and appearance.

Can I have a sapphire incorporated into an existing piece of jewelry?
Yes, you can. Do you have an heirloom, a loose stone or a piece of jewelry you would like to have customized? Feel free to send me a message, I’d love to see what’s possible.

Is sapphire suitable for an engagement ring?
Sure. The hardness of sapphire makes it an excellent choice for a ring to be worn daily.

What does a piece of jewelry with a sapphire cost?
It depends on the color, size and quality of the stone. I always work with natural sapphires and tailor the design to your needs and budget.
