Nooba Jewelry offers a variety of collections, with most pieces being crafted from 14-karat gold. However, The Nordic Collection exclusively features jewelry made from 9-karat gold. I’ve received a lot of questions about the differences between the two alloys. So, let me clarify them for you.
The difference between 9-karat and 14-karat gold lies in the percentage of precious metal in the alloy. 9-karat has 37.5%, while 14-karat gold has 58.5%, with other metals, like silver and copper, making up the rest.
The advantages of 9-karat gold
In the Netherlands, the use of 9-karat gold is not yet widespread, but it is becoming increasingly popular. It’s not officially recognized as gold in the country as it consists of less than half of pure gold. However, this is not the case in other countries such as the UK or Germany.
The advantage of 9-karat gold is that it is nearly half the price of 14-karat gold. Additionally, it has a much longer lifespan and better quality than gold-plated jewelry. The layer of gold on gold-plated pieces wears off quickly, while 9-karat jewelry retains its color. However, the color of 9-karat gold can oxidize due to the reaction with air and chemicals. But you can simply restore this by cleaning your piece with a polishing cloth or having it polished. So, if you want to purchase a gold piece of jewelry with a lower budget, it’s an excellent investment.
The advantages of 14-karat gold
14-karat gold is pricier than 9-karat gold, but it is also more durable and doesn’t tarnish. Therefore, it’s a perfect choice for valuable jewelry pieces like wedding bands, engagement rings, or pieces with sentimental value. Furthermore, if you are allergic to copper, then 14-karat gold is a better choice for you.
If you compare the color of the two alloys, you will notice that 14-karat gold is slightly warmer. However, it’s a subtle difference, and both can be worn together with ease.
Either way, both are great alloys to work with and have their advantages. Which one you choose is up to you! 😉
