Why silver discolors and what you can do about it

Waarom verkleurt zilver

Silver is beautiful. It shines, is stylish and timeless. But let’s face it: silver discolors. Always. And that’s perfectly normal.

Why does silver discolor?

Silver reacts with the air; especially with the sulfur compounds it contains. This creates a dark layer on the surface, also called oxidation. So it has nothing to do with poor quality. Even the purest silver discolors over time.

Factors that can speed up the process:

  • Sweat
  • Perfume, lotions and hairspray
  • Cleaners
  • Some foods (such as eggs or onion)
  • Damp or sealed storage boxes

Silver is alive and it shows. But fortunately you can keep it looking great.

What can you do about discoloration of silver?

1. Use a silver polishing cloth
The easiest way to freshen up silver. Just rub, and your jewelry shines again.

2. Wear your jewelry regularly
Silver that you wear often stays more beautiful than silver that lies dusty. The friction of your skin and clothing acts as a natural polish.

3. Take off silver when water and products
Don’t wear your jewelry in the shower, pool or while cleaning. Perfume, creams and hairspray? Apply first, then put on your jewelry.

4. Store your jewelry properly
Use an airtight bag or box, preferably with an anti-seize strip or dry cloth. Keep silver separate from other jewelry to avoid scratching and discoloration.

5. Get it professionally cleaned
Has your silver become dull or black? A goldsmith or jeweler can professionally clean or polish it. Then it will shine like new again.

Summary

Silver discolors. There is little you can do about it, but you can make sure it stays beautiful. With a little care and attention, your silver jewelry will stay radiant for years.

Tip: Want jewelry that barely fades? Then gold – white or yellow – might be a better choice.
