What are birthstones anyway?
Birthstones are gemstones traditionally associated with the month in which you were born. Each month has its own stone, with a unique color, energy and meaning. Consider the deep blue sapphire of September or the bright diamond of April.
The origins of birthstones go way back. In ancient times, meaning was assigned to certain stones. Reference is often made to the breastplate of the Jewish high priest Aaron, which contained twelve precious stones – each symbolizing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Later, these stones were associated with the twelve months of the year.
Today, birthstones are mostly seen as something personal. They tell a story: about who you are, when you were born, or about someone dear to you.
