January’s birthstone: garnet
Were you born in January? Then the garnet belongs to your month. A gemstone that is often deep red and has a long history in jewelry. People have worn it for centuries, not only for its color, but also for what the stone means to them.
In this blog, you will read more about the garnet: its meaning, the different types and how to incorporate it into a piece of jewelry that suits you.
The meaning of garnet
The garnet is one of the oldest gemstones used in jewelry. In ancient times, travelers took it as protection on the road. In the Middle Ages, it was seen as a stone of courage and perseverance.
Today, people wear it primarily because of what it exudes: strength, loyalty and connection. But just as often it is chosen because the color appeals, or simply because it is January’s birthstone.
Different types of shells
Many people immediately think of garnet as deep red, but the stone comes in many more shades. A few well-known varieties:
- Almandine – deep red to brownish red; the best known species.
- Pyrope – bright red with a warm glow.
- Grossulary – green varieties such as tsavorite, as well as colorless stones.
- Spessartien – orange to yellowish hues.
- Andradite – including demantoite, a rare and beautiful green stone.
This diversity makes garnet suitable for all kinds of styles: from understated to outspoken.
Garnet in a piece of jewelry
Garnet is a strong stone. This makes it well suited for jewelry that is worn often, such as rings, pendants or bracelets. The deep red hue combines beautifully with both gold and silver and suits quiet designs, as well as pieces that are allowed to stand out a bit more.
You can wear garnet solo just fine, but it also works beautifully in combination with other stones. That makes it a fine choice for birthstone jewelry, for example.
Care and maintenance
Garnet stays most beautiful if you clean it occasionally. Use warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners: they can damage some varieties.
Preferably store your jewelry separately to avoid scratches.
A timeless gemstone
Whichever variety you choose – deep red or fresh green – garnet always has something of its own. The stone is strong, stylish and versatile. A great choice if you’re looking for something personal.
